Bloggers to host female musician, artist gathering
* Two local bloggers seeking to shine a light on female artists and musicians in Omaha will host a roundtable discussion and show Wednesday, Feb. 29th at House of Loom, 1012 South 10th St. Sally Deskins of the Les Femmes Folles: Celebrating Women in Art blog and Hilary Stohs-Krause of the X-Rated: Women in Music multimedia blog and Lincoln-based radio show have gathered Mynabirds' frontwoman Laura Burhenn, actress/singer Kristin Kluver, artist/poet Felicia Webster, ætherplough troupe leader Susann Suprenant and local indie rock band Howard, fronted by Annamarie McClellan. The event starts at 5 p.m. with a cocktail hour, followed by the discussion. After the discussion, the participants and their collaborators will present poetry and theatrical performances, leading up to sets by Howard and Burhenn.
* Make Believe Studios, 805 Hickory St., will host the Omaha session of the Red Bull Music Academy Thursday, March 1st at 6 p.m. House of Loom's Brent Crampton will host a question-and-answer session with DJ Spinna, who rose to prominence alongside rappers like Talib Kweli and Mos Def in the '90s. The Omaha session is free, though reservations for the limited-capacity event are being taken online at redbullmusicacademy.com. The website is also taking applications for the New York sessions, which selects 60 people to participate in a week's worth of studio sessions and lectures, all free of charge. DJ Spinna will appear later on the evening of March 1st at House of Loom, where he will take part in loom's 6th anniversary night. Cover is $5 for the event, though attendees of the earlier Red Bull Music Academy Omaha session will be admitted free.
* Omaha's best shot to catch the laidback alt.country of Dead Leaves is coming up Saturday, Feb. 18th at the Barley Street Tavern, 2735 S. 62nd St. Nashville-based Travis Egnor and his locally-assembled backing band will join John Statz for the show. Egnor is tentatively planning to move to Baltimore at the end of the month.
* NPR's Weekend Edition Sunday profiled longtime Omaha singer-songwriter Simon Joyner on its show February 12. The piece, which included comments from Conor Oberst and the Reader's own Tim McMahan, previewed Joyner's upcoming double-album and commemorated his 20-year recording career.
