Garden Suite

This exhibit, consisting of garden and floral-themed photography printed on aluminum, highlights Paula’s interest in recording floral themes from the sublime to the ridiculous- most commonly a combination of both in each image. She is intrigued by the effort some make to beautify their humble and/or palacial abodes and drawn to the effortless fascination we share with botanical features.

Constructing History: Structures and Silhouettes

Period dress and reproduction, focusing on the major changes between 1890 and 1930, are the subjects of "Constructing History: Structures and Silhouettes," an exhibition at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's Robert Hillestad Textile Gallery.

The exhibition is open through June 28. The gallery is on the second floor of the Home Economics Building, 35th Street north of East Campus Loop.

Molly J. McPherson curated the exhibition in partial fulfillment of her thesis work in the UNL Department of Textiles, Merchandising and Fashion Design. Donations from Leota Cahall of Wilber are the driving element in the exhibition. McPherson, working with Professor Barbara Trout, identified additional garments from the Historic Costume Collection donated by Katie Best, Meg Lauerman and the former UNL Teachers College.

The exhibition also features extant garment reproductions from the period. McPherson constructed these garments to facilitate the study of structure and dressmaking techniques prominent at the time. The changes in fashion and how they relate to clothing choices made by individuals in the Midwest are highlighted. Wedding apparel, athletic wear and undergarments help illustrate these changes.

A public reception at the gallery will be from 6-8 p.m. May 24, with a talk by McPherson at 7.

Free Community Arts Afternoon

UX Center for the Arts will host Free Community Arts Afternoon, Sunday, June 2 from 1-4 p.m.   This event is free and open to the public.

Free Community Arts Afternoon features live music by Chris Sayre, hands-on art projects for children and adults, pottery and printmaking demonstrations, outdoor mural painting, face painting, henna “tattooing”, and marbled paper making. Visitors are invited to bring a t-shirt or purchase one for $5 at the event to participate in a tie-dying and screen printing activity.

Jesters, Clowns, & Fools

LUX Center for the Arts presents “Jesters, Clowns & Fools”.  This show opens June 7 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and runs through July 26.  Bonnie O’Connell uses collage, book arts, prints, and assemblages to explore the motif of clowns, jesters, and fools in our society by taking a deeper look into the cultural significance of prominent figures in athletics, academia, theatre, and politics. O’Connell is the recipient of grants from The National Endowment for the Arts, The Nebraska Arts Council, Nexus Center for Contemporary Art, and The Woman’s Studio Workshop.

The Challenge of Fun
