Building Community with Beer: The Impact of Omaha Beer Week

A great man once said, “There is always room for more beer.” In Omaha, it seems as though every spare nook and cranny are being filled with breweries. Craft beer demand in our city is so high, that our own Omaha Beer Week event has become a national destination for many who long for a pint of Bourbon County without Chicago prices.

Things are changing in the beer scene here in Omaha, and it is incredibly exciting.

Said great man is Chris Bettini, internationally recognized beer aficionado, Marketing chair of Omaha Beer Week, and the monk at most Crescent Moon beer events.

“Omaha Beer Week spawned out of a discussion between Dustin Boushon, the owner of Krug Park, and Bill Baburek,...

Hot stuff: Cup O’ Creativity

“Art & Soup is the VNA’s SIGNATURE event,” said Caryn Hohnholt VP of Fund Development for the Visiting Nurses’ Association (VNA).

At this year’s 16th annual Art & Soup, held at the Embassy Suites in La Vista, 20 Omaha-area restaurants competed for the honor of having the best soup.

Hohnholt said they pulled out all the stops and really put their heart and soul into trying to come up with new and inventive soups.

While being the polar bear was by far the most fun, I also enjoyed my shifts as the “soda jerk” in the soda fountain portion of the museum. People listened to me talk about how soda fountains were once commonplace, and once in a while someone would show up who actually remembered visiting a soda fountain back in the 40s or 50s and they’d get so excited about standing in a recreated version of their memory.

Time Warp

Imagine my surprise years later when I moved to Nebraska and found out that there is a fully functioning soda fountain just a...
