Dragon Cafe

When I try out a new place that I don’t know much about I usually go into what I call Vague Mode. This is where I don’t go into it anticipating any particular experience and I don’t decide beforehand what I’m going to eat. I just waltz in and make a vague statement to the server and whatever happens with my meal happens.

Vague Mode can be surprisingly exciting.

So when I went to Dragon Cafe in La Vista and the waitress asked me what I wanted to eat, I waved at the menu vaguely and said, “Well, I like chicken…” and waited to see what would happen. She suggested the General Tao’s Chicken, which I went ahead and ordered accompanied by fried rice and egg drop soup. Then I sat and waited to be...

Omaha Beer Fest

Tickets are on sale for the 4th Annual Omaha Beer Fest taking place June 6-7 at Stinson Park. This year they’ve included some food trucks to complement the fifty or so breweries represented. Live music, beer education sessions and other attractions will make this a fun event, particularly for those who can remain upright and cognizant after sampling so much beer. http://www.omahabeerfest.com/

The Dining Room at Union Pacific

If you've never set foot inside the Union Pacific building, it's worth a look. The corporate building is open to the public (or, at least, the atrium is) so anyone can wander into the building and have some fun watching people in business casual clothing scurry from one place to another. I can't guarantee that someone wouldn't eventually ask you what you're doing standing there watching people, but hey, it's worth a shot.

Walk into the front doors of the building and you'll undoubtedly spot the Dining Room up on the next level. Take the stairs or the escalator, but look out because everyone there is on their way to something, and whatever that it, they have to be there quickly.

Out of my...

Discounted Dining

Some people are embarrassed by using coupons and discounts at restaurants. Not me. I’ll walk into these places waving my coupon over my head, humming a happy song about how I’m not paying full price.

My experiment for the week: all my eating adventures included discounted vouchers from various sources. It wasn’t without its hiccups, but all in all I’m declaring my experiment a success.

Groupon

I’ve used Groupon successfully before for discounted race tickets, mainly because I figure if I’m going to pay someone to let me run anywhere it might as well be at a discounted rate. So I went into this knowing that Groupon has proven to work for me in the past and that most merchants seem to...

Is It Patio Season Yet?

Finally, Omaha is on the cusp of patio season. So stop by Corkscrew Wine and Cheese, 10924 Prairie Brook Rd in Rockbrook Village, and enjoy their quaint patio. Another reason to stop by is that their Rosé has started to arrive. This past week, they have received 13 cases of the most popular Bieler Pere et Fils. They are also currently pouring a Montepulciano Rosé by the glass. Stop out and see Janell and Justin this afternoon for a glass.

Get Your Mug Out.

Krug Park, 6205 Maple St., is offering Monday Mug Night in April which features the lovely Stella Artois wine chalice. Try the Stella Artois Cidre, made with hand-picked apples. Get your glass and first...
