If you have never been, then you should go out of your way to Metropolitan Community Colleges' Sage Student Bistro on the Fort Campus (30th and Fort, Building 22). It was recently voted best overall restaurant in Nebraska by the users of OpenTable, an online reservation service with over 18,700 users. The Bistro also placed second in the overall food category and came in fourth for ambience. There are many other Omaha restaurants that use the OpenTable reservation system that also were high in the rankings such as Spencer's for Steaks and Chops, Mahogany Prime and the Grey Plume. Caribbean Delight-ful

Is it kar-uh-BEE-uhn or kuh-RIB-ee-an?

Let’s not worry about the pronunciation. Caribbean Delight is a smaller eatery and novelty shop, tucked away in a strip mall just north of 72nd and Blondo. The hip Benson strip, pulsing with art, booze, and a rash of new restaurants, is just a few blocks away.

But here, the food and atmosphere are just as interesting.

Inside, original folk art shares space on the walls with the occasional Red Stripe poster. One wall is devoted to the shop, where you can get a Jamaica swimsuit, a Bob Marley t-shirt, and yes, even a Rasta hat. Dueling televisions reported the news and reality TV headlines at first, but were later muted in favor of some reggae.

Eater, Meet Food

My friend (we will call her Susan) and I often discuss the local food scene. Is there really a scene? Are people really passionate about local food, supporting small farms and eating well? Or are they going to the farmers market so they can wear a floppy hat and tote a canvas shopping bag just to buy a pastry and a $5 jar of jam.

Does anyone really know what to do with tarragon? Or kholrabi? Or beets? Or any other produce item at the farmers market? Is it a place to shop and feed our families or is it a place to be seen?

My friend has a slightly more cynical view than I do, believing most people buy a bunch of Swiss chard only to let it rot in the fridge while ordering take out from...

July Local Food News

Dutch Girl Creamery located just outside of Lincoln, Ne., launched a kick-starter campaign to help raise funds to build a cheese making plant at their farm. The goat dairy and cheese making business is an offshoot of the Shadow Brook Farm brand, owned by Charuth Van Beuzekom and Kevin Loth. At press time Dutch Girl Creamery still needed $15,000 to meet its $25,000 fundraising goal.
