Union for Contemporary Art Quilt Project

The Union for Contemporary Art, located at 24th and Burdette in north Omaha, is committed to uniting artists with community in the Metro area. Shea Wilkinson, a current fellow at the Union for Contemporary Art, is organizing and creating a community quilt as part of her 6-month residency. Wilkinson grew up sewing, receiving her UCA residency with free hand quilts done on a non-computerized domestic sewing machine. To create a community quilt Wilkinson is looking for as many blocks as possible from individuals in the community. The blocks may range from 8-20 inches in any direction. They can be made of new or recycled fabric, and other sewable materials, such as paper, if it is durable. The content of the block is open. It can reflect something about the community in the past, present, or future, and be appropriate for public viewing. Whether you consider yourself creative or not, if you have something you want to share about your community (geographic, religious, artistic, athletic – any community), you qualify to contribute to this venture. When the project is completed, it will travel around public spaces in Omaha. The call for entry is open until March 31, 2013 and is free to enter. For more information go to http://www.u-ca.org/
