Suttle seeks recall delay

Mayor Jim Suttle was expected to find out this weekend if he'd face a special recall election, but the mayor is asking for an extension of the signature validation period that could push the process into February of next year. Suttle filed paperwork with the Douglas County District Court on Nov. 24 seeking an injunction that would give the Douglas County Election Commission 75 days to validate the more than 37,000 signatures submitted by the Mayor Suttle Recall Committee. State law currently gives the commission 15 days to throw out signatures that are duplicates or are not from an Omaha resident. Douglas County Election Commissioner Dave Phipps said the agency was on pace to hit its Dec. 4 deadline. Douglas County Judge Peter Bataillon is expected to hear the case this week.
