Maha offers festival preview with local band showcases

* Maha Music Festival has unleashed its local band showcase line-up and it should be a great preview of what’s in store for Saturday, August 13. The showcases are curated by three of the local bands that will be playing Maha's local stage. Those three bands were chosen by HearNebraska.org and the festival. The first showcase, hosted by Noah's Ark Was a Spaceship, is Wednesday, June 22, featuring New Lungs and Ketchup & Mustard Gas at the Waiting Room Lounge, 6212 Maple St. The second, hosted by The Machete Archive, is Thursday, June 30, featuring The Ideal Cleaners, Irkutsk and Powerful Science at Duffy's Tavern, 1412 O St. in Lincoln. The third and final showcase, hosted by The So-So Sailors, is Thursday, July 28, featuring Digital Leather, Fortnight and Millions of Boys at The Slowdown, 729 North 14th St. Maha organizers will be on hand to give away T-shirts, Maha merch and even some tickets. The showcases are free. * The Slowdown, with its freshly-hung “Welcome Baseball Stadium Fans” sign hanging on its outer east wall, will undertake an intriguing metamorphosis during the week-and-a-half College World Series. Out go the tall-boy-clutching, Urban Outfitted indie music fans, and in comes a crowd that may resemble the overflow crowds that gather at places like Pauli's. Inside, the Slowdown will offer free shows including two Goo dance parties and several cover bands, including Secret Weapon, Cover Me Badd and The Song Remains the Same. Chris Saub and power-pop historians The Third Men are also in on the act. * Keep an eye on TheReader.com during the week, as Backbeat starts checking in with exciting music developments around town. First up is an exclusive look at The House of Loom, 1012 South 10th St., the upcoming bar, nightclub and DJ venue being spearheaded by loom mastermind Brent Crampton.
