Cutting Room for September 13

  • In the United States, the news that Hayao Miyazaki is retiring from filmmaking was met with tears by fans of international animation and invisible blinking question marks over the heads of most people. Hoping to change that, Studio Ghibli is releasing The Wind Rises, likely Miyazaki’s last film, for a qualifying Oscar run. You may not catch it in theaters, but do catch it at some point. This would be like knowing it was the last Walt Disney film ever…and Disney was a pure genius and not anti-Semitic…
  • Look, this cannot be the first time you have heard this information. Not if it in any way interests you, but I’ll pass it along just so everyone is on the same page: Harry Potter is back. Kinda. Sorta. Not really. But J.K. Rowling will write the screenplay inspired by the textbook Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them with an eye towards a spinoff franchise from the rich Potterverse. Apparently Potter fans (Pottheads) are of two minds: half of them peed themselves and discovered God, the other half blasted the crass commercialism and sullying of the brand. Me? I just tried not to get between them.
  • The next Jurassic Park may be a reboot or a straight third sequel. But now we know what to call it: Jurassic World. It’s unclear whether this is a play on the “Disney World” theme park element or an indication that dinosaurs be everywhere yo. Personally, I hope it’s the latter. Mostly because I want dinosaurs everywhere, yo.
  • In what may wind up being the “shot heard round the world” that signals a new war on bloated blockbuster budgets, Pirates of the Caribbean 5 has quietly been delayed. To when? Good question. The insanely profitable series lost a wee bit of star power when Johnny Depp sullied his brand with The Lone Ranger. That and a series of monster-funded flops has made studios gun-shy. These pirates have died before and come back, but if they fade off into the afterlife without much noise, we’ll have the first casualty in the war for higher quality. In other words: Die, Pirates, die.

For years, one rivalry has dwarfed all others. No, it’s not The Chicago Bears and The Green Bay Packers or Right and Left Twix. It’s “readers” versus “watchers,” as in those who (gasp) read books and...
