Cutting Room for August 16

  • I apologize for the following word play. Are you ready for some food for thought? There’s a huge problem we need to chew on, and Aksarben Cinema is serving up some delicious discussion. On Sept 19, from 5:30-8:30 pm, my favorite massive cineplex is partnering with Bread for the World and Whole Foods to bring a free screening of A Place at the Table (a movie I thought was more than a savory appetizer but a thoughtful main course). For dessert, the theater is holding a Q&A with a panel of experts discussing the hunger crisis right here in America’s bread basket. Call 402.905.4804 or RSVP online (aksarbencinema.com) to make sure you make this meal. I’m done.
  • Really, we could run a new Star Wars rumor every day until Episode VII comes out in a few years, as there seems to be a new morsel of gossipy goodness each passing hour. The latest is that Ewan McGregor may be back as Obi-Wan. Sure, it doesn’t make a lick of damn sense given the timeline but this franchise abandoned good sense willingly awhile back. Still, if you’re going to take any part of the prequels that people liked and keep it in the new flicks, you’re basically down to McGregor or Natalie Portman’s exposed midriff.
  • The desperation with which fans of director Edgar Wright and actor Simon Pegg want Pegg to play Ant-Man for Wright’s upcoming adaptation is now just being toyed with, as Pegg tweeted an image of him at Marvel Studios pointing to a picture of Ant-Man only to have both the studio and the actor say this wasn’t a casting announcement. This is like the prank people play where they make a friend think the won the lottery and then force them to return to their terrible normal lives.
