Court orders raises for firefighters

The state labor court ruled Jan. 4 that the city owes its firefighters as much as $2 million in pay raises for 2009 because the two sides have yet to agree on a new contract. Earlier this year, the firefighters' union agreed to wage freezes for 2009 and 2010 if a new agreement could be reached. The decision could have a large impact on the city's 2011 budget, as the firefighters are now expected to win a similar suit over 2010 pay raises, which could cost the city an additional $5 million.
